An essential component of teaching and learning is the assessment of student knowledge. As such, schools and teachers need to ensure that the mechanisms that are used to measure student learning do so with fidelity to the content being measured (Content Validity) and consistently produce the same results in the same contexts (Reliability). This ensures that the statements made about students’ performance are valid. Within this process the following are undertaken:
- An analysis of the existing assessment system (assessment policies and practices) to determine strengths and weaknesses
- Development of a custom assessment framework to meet the needs of the school community though stakeholder consultations
- Training sessions to build staff capacity in assessment related skills such as item writing, assessment development and scoring, and providing feedback for improvement
- Establishing quality assurance mechanisms to monitor internal assessment quality
